This could be a very good solution to a long term problem. If done right it could be nice as your boundries are restricted to a certain point keeping your empire from snow balling and nomming all other factions while you are encouraged to accomplish other map objectives to win the game. I'm cautiously intrigued to see how the new mechanic of only being able to conquer one other race in Total Warhammer works out. As others have mentioned some games have delt with it in various ways and to varying degrees of success with mechanics like the civil war or realm divide. I wholeheartedly agree this has been an ongoing issue with total war games throughout the series. Maybe some combination of AI improvement, reduction in top end of settlement income (so that you have to expand to earn and can't just turtle and boom before annexing everything with ease) and negotiated peace settlements as opposed to conquest = ownership. I'm not sure if there's any one fix that could make the late game better. That foe is now willing to peace out because you've got a momentary advantage, which means you've solved the most dangerous part of the campaign and can focus on booming and eating the neighbors individually. Like, at the start of the Charlemange campaign on Legendary you can peace out your southern enemies, then hang on until you stack wipe one of your two remaining foes. The War Weariness mechanic is a good start (CA please steal more from Paradox), but if you play well you never get hurt by it enough to care. In territory that a human could use to support eight or nine armies, the AI will only be able to pay for four or five stacks. You get big enough and you can beat the AI by sending two or three stacks to their one, expanding like crazy all over the map.Īlso, the major AI groups are rarely good at fighting back.
